Two top boat tours in Pictured Rocks.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is just that, a lakeshore. If you don’t see these amazing rocks from the water, you’re missing half of the park! Hiking is wonderful, but getting out onto Lake Superior is just as amazing.
There are two boating adventures in Pictured Rocks that I wholeheartedly recommend. One gets you up close and personal with the rocks, and the other gets you out on the open water and teaches you a bunch of local history.
Shipwreck Tours in a Glass Bottomed Boat
Sometimes the top rated attraction is a tourist trap. Sometimes it’s the top rated attraction because it’s really awesome!
The second version is absolutely the case with the Shipwreck Tours in Munising. These cruises take you out into Lake Superior, showing you inlets and islands and, yes, several shipwrecks.
Lake Superior is a graveyard of sunken ships, and this tour takes you to multiple sites. Glass viewing areas on the boat’s lower level let you look straight down on these buried vessels as your captain deftly steers you right over the top of them. It’s a one-of-a-kind view, and the cruise out to the wreck sites is a beautiful experience in itself, dotted with islands, rock formations, and lighthouses.
Kayak Adventures
I love a good kayak trip! There’s something about getting out into the water on a small craft that feels hands-on and personal. There are several tour companies in Pictured Rocks, and the one that I recommend is Paddling Michigan. They offer a variety of tours, some that include both boating and hiking. The one I took was the Paddler's Choice Kayak Tour.
They shuttle you out to the launch point with a fleet of two-seater kayaks and an experienced guide. You’ll get a quick kayaking lesson, and then you’ll set off up the coast! Your guide will tell you all sorts of interesting history and facts about these beautiful and colorful cliffs. If the water levels cooperate, you’ll even be able to paddle through a narrow crack in the rocks, touching them on both sides! You’ll pull up onto a beach for a picnic lunch, and then return the same way you came.
It's an unforgettable experience unlike anything you've ever seen before. I'm a bit of a kayak tour junkie, and this tour in Pictured Rocks takes the top spot, no question about it.
Don’t Miss These Pictured Rocks Boat Tours!
Both trips are absolutely worth the time and the cost. The kayak tours in particular aren’t cheap, but they’re worth every penny. Where else are you going to get the opportunity to explore amazing rock formations on a lake the size of most seas? It’s an experience you can’t get anywhere else. Enjoy!
